The Czech Republic is well known for its tasty lagers and as such a number of UK supermarkets are stocking not just the famous ones but some that are a bit more remote and even home-branded Czech lagers. Many of these are sold at very low price, with a typical 500ml bottle costing anywhere from 99p to £1.40. The old saying is that you get what you pay for, but in this case cheap does not necessarily mean bad. Here a few of the more common ones are put to the test.
Aldi – Staroslav
The only clue on the bottle as to where this 5% lager comes from is the phrase on the back saying “Brewed in Bohemia” and that it is a Czech import that has been packaged for Aldi Stores. However, a little investigation shows that it is actually brewed by Kralovsky Pivovar Krusovice. This is a Heineken-owned brewery in Krusovice and the beer is the most subtle of the lagers listed here with a light bitterness that is only just detectable on the finish. This is a very middle-of-the-road lager and the poorest of this selection.
Asda – Pivovar Herold
Asda is more forthcoming on the label of this 5% lager as it is in fact brewed by the Pivovar Herold brewery in Breznice. The light hoppy aroma disguises a strong bitterness and a lasting bitter finish.
