Cover letters can be quite tricky, because they present different purposes. While some employers see the cover letter as a large part of the application process, others complete disregard it. While the resume summarizes the technical skills, work experience and education, the cover letter should emphasize the personal attributes and traits, such as people skills, organizational skills and overall personality.
General Rules when Writing a Cover Letter
Unless the employer specifically asks for a detailed cover letter as part of the application, a simple sentence or two will suffice when sending the resume. Besides the conventional "dear" and "sincerely" when preparing the application, a simple sentences describing the purpose of the contact will be plenty. Below is an example:
