All over the world, women in particular have resorted to cucumber slices to soothe and relax eyes, and the picture of a woman lying back with the slices strategically placed over her eyes is a common one in advertisements for spas and beauty products.

Aloe Extract in Hydrogel Polymer Technology

South African Kerryne Krause-Neufeldt has revolutionised the field by developing unique dermal delivery eye masks using an aloe extract rather than the familiar cucumber, since research had determined that many people were allergic to cucumbers. Called eyeSlices, the product is sold in retail markets as well as to the cosmetic, beauty therapy, salon and spa sectors.

The initial technology had been developed by the South African Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, which invented a water-soluble polymer gel that functioned as a dermal delivery system, that is, a gel-like substance that could be liquefied and solidified to absorb and emit ingredients to the skin. The slow release system effectively administers a powerful blend of active ingredients and moisture into the eye area. Krause-Neufeldt discovered it while researching possible formulae for cosmetic products and was quick to realise its potential.

From Back-yard to Multi-million Rand Business

Krause-Neufeldt purchased the exclusive global license to develop and market the product and over the next seven years, perfected the technology, improving the formulation and adding active ingredients and biodynes.

She and her husband worked in a make-shift laboratory on their property, experimenting on hundreds of different freeze/thaw cycles till they finally perfected a scaleable method for infusing the liquid active ingredients and then turning the polymer into a gel of the right consistency. She then design the custom-made packaging which allows the gel product to be reused and eyeSlices® were launched.

Today the product complies with all European Union specifications and is marketed by her company, iSlices, in the USA, the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Chile, Mexico, Dubai, Cyprus, Finland and Poland.
