Why is it that so many students feel disconnected from their parents when making major career decisions early on in post-secondary? It's the same old rhetoric: parents just don't understand. The only difference is that these days, it might very well be true.
The labour market of today is unlike any experienced before. Many of the jobs our new university grads are competing for today, didn't even exist when it came time for them to choose a major. Furthermore, the likelihood that these grads will remain with this first big career job for more than 3 years is slim to nil.
And what about how they found this job in the first place? Pull out the paper and sit down with a cup of coffee and a big red marker? LOL! The only job that's going to get anyone will be at the place serving up the coffee.
