Recent years have seen high levels of economic growth in countries such as India and China which are often referred to as emergent or emerging markets. As such, some investors have developed a strategy of investing in such emergent markets with a verity of instruments so as to benefit from potentially higher rates of return than can be achieved domestically.

Emerging Market Investment: Why Invest in Emerging Market Bonds?

Despite the potential for high rates of return which may be obtained by investing in emerging markets, as with all high return investments there is also the consideration of the risk factor. One way an investor may reduce the risk taken is to choose a form of investment with a lower level of risk in the first place.

Whilst bond holders may not expect to see the same level of returns achieved by shareholders, the unique structure of the instrument also sees that a bond holder has a higher priority claim on the assets of the company should problems occur. As such, an investment in emerging market bonds allow an investor to gain an exposure to emergent markets whilst taking a much lower level of risk in comparison to an investment in stocks and shares.
